A habit is “we run a nightly snapshot and it goes somewhere.” A strategy is knowing where it goes, how fast you can get it back, what happens if that location goes down, and whether you’ve actually tested the whole thing. Don’t use the same AWS account (or GCP project, or DigitalOcean account) as your production environment. Create a separate one. This is the single most important isolation step. An incident in your prod environment shouldn’t give an attacker or an automation error access to your backups.

- Every 6-12 hours is better for anything with active transactions
- Continuous or near-continuous only if you genuinely can’t afford to lose more than a few minutes of data
Be realistic about your actual usage patterns. A marketing site doesn’t need 15-minute backups. A payment processing backend might.

Never testing restores
This is still the most common one. The only way to know your backups work is to restore from them. Do it in a non-production environment. Do it at least once a quarter. Make it part of your team’s routine, not an afterthought.
Encryption: Don’t Treat It as Optional
Quick point but an important one.
Your backups contain production data. That’s your database. Your user records. Your application configs. Whatever an attacker would want from your production system is sitting in those backup files.
Encrypt backups before they leave your server. Use a key that isn’t stored on the same machine. Keep a copy of the encryption key somewhere safe and separate from the backup itself.
